Signs Your Septic Tank Needs Some TLC

Signs Your Septic Tank

Septic tanks collect the wastewater from your home. They can be efficient and economical to use because they are self-contained, have a simple design, and are easy to install. Additionally, they could be a good fit for homes in rural communities that lack a nearby city sewer line. The system consists of the tank, where waste is naturally separated out, based on weight – oils on top, waste water in the middle, and heavier solids at the bottom. Naturally-occurring bacteria in the water helps to break down the waste, but material that cannot be broken down is pumped out to a drain field, land near the tank that has material like gravel or sand used to filter the wastewater. Perforated pipes connected to the tank are placed in the soil in the drain field to distribute the wastewater. The gravel and soil naturally filter the water as it seeps into the soil.

To maintain a septic tank, you should avoid certain actions. Trees or shrubs should not be planted near tanks because the roots could clog the pipes. The drain field should not be driven over. Neither should the drain field be paved. Only grass should be over this area since it helps remove excess water and prevents erosion. Also, water from the roof, driveways, and other areas should be moved away from the drain field. Periodic pumping of the solids from the tank into the drainage field should be done based on the number of people in the home, how much water is used and the amount solids in the wastewater. A radar level transmitter may help determine when to pump.

Signs of a Septic Tank Problem

An indication that your system needs some “TLC” can be seen in various ways.

  • land above the drain field may be wet
  • sinks and drains in the home start to drain slowly, get backed up or a gurgling sound can be heard coming from them
  • a bad odor coming from the tank or drain field

One reason these things may occur is due to the presence of a biomat on the drain field. This is created when the anaerobic bacteria (bacteria that can live in an oxygen-free environment) try to break down the materials in the water. They have only a limited capacity to do so and therefore, when the wastewater and bacteria go out into the drain field, they create a biomat which clogs the system, leading to backups. A way to prevent this would be to use a system with aerobic bacteria (bacteria that lives in an environment with oxygen) breaking down the materials in the water.

Other signs of problems include:

  • algal blooms in nearby ponds and lakes
  • lush, green grass with spongy soil over the drain field or septic tank even when the weather is dry
  • high levels of coliform bacteria and nitrates in well water

To prevent issues, perform routine maintenance like regular pumping of the wastewater into the drain field, or, if it’s no longer usable or fixable, completely replacing the drain field. Good maintenance of your septic tank is important. It makes your property more comfortable to live in and helps with property value.

Rolling Shutters Or Electronic Shutters For Your Camera Compared To Total Shutters

ELECTRONIC SHUTTERS

Electronic shutters or rolling shutters is a method of photography in which a picture is captured by scanning the scene rapidly, both horizontally and vertically. Not all parts of the image of the scene are displayed on the camera at once and produce distortions of fast-moving objects such as cars and other moving objects. These rolling shutters can be both mechanical and electronic. There are a number of advantages to electronic shutters compared to mechanical shutters.

This mechanism is commonly found in digital and still video cameras and use CMOS sensors. The effect of rolling camera shutters is most noticeable when imagining conditions mean to capture motion, fast lights or objects that are not stationary. While some CMOS sensors are used globally, the consumer market usually makes uses only of an automatic rolling shutter.

Electronic Shutter v. Total shutter:

Rolling shutters do not expose the entire shutter at the same time and instead works by exposing different parts of the sensor during different points of time. Total shutters on the other hand shut off the light exposure to the sensor and only allows the light to hit the sensory field for a brief amount of time. The picture hence is captured in the same moment.

Rolling shutter, on the other hand, captures images continuously for a brief period of time exposing the shutter for the same brief period. Therefore, for an extremely miniscule period of time, an Rolling Shutter Automatic captures the picture in moments. An automatic rolling shutter usually makes use of a CMOS sensor.

Types of shutters:

As mentioned above, there are many types of shutters apart from electronic shutters. They are:

  1. Mechanical shutters: Mechanical structures as the name suggests are operated mechanically. Most motion-sensing cameras and large sensory cameras use this technology.
    1. Focal plane shutters: A series of blades start the exposure and a series of blades similarly end the exposure.
    2. Leaf shutters: they are built into the lens next to the aperture and comprise of a series of blades that open and converge from the center.
  2. Electronic Shutters: digital sensors can be switched on and off and comprises a comparatively lower number of moving parts providing a totally silent exposure. There are many types of electronic shutters as well. They are:
    1. Fully electronic shutters: These are either large or small and the shutter rate is determined by the size of the shutter. Similarly, the quality of the picture and pixels may also be determined by the size of the shutter.
    2. Electronic first curtains: These use a mechanical shutter to end the exposure and then combined it with the start of an electronic shutter to match the rate of the mechanical shutter.
    3. Global shutters: Global shutters can determine all rows of pixels at the same time to give what is termed a global shutter. Although these are great for video, they are also more expensive due to the complex technology involved with global shutters. They are not common for applications where image quality is critical.
