Even with all the radical changes and innovations, the only long-term solution to the energy problem is significant cuts to overall internet use in near future. This is achievable by imposing tax or every bit of data we use in form of a fee for uploading photographs or direct restriction of web-based activities. Another way is to switch coloured images to black-and-white which would definitely reduce data consumption.

Governments across the world including that of the UK are surfacing against the intense climate change geared by internet activities and not merely data centres alone. Tech giants namely Google, Facebook and Apple are leading the way to be more environmental friendly, housing their data facilities in cold climates and Microsoft’s efforts over underwater data centre; Project Natick.
